Filter water contaminants using nanofibrous membrane

Our research team from the Department of Civil Engineering has invented a nanofibrous membrane that can filter contaminants in water, especially heavy metals and bacteria effectively. The membrane filter is operated by simple filtration process using gravity and can be reused after cleaning with vinegar. The heavy metal and bacteria concentration of the filtrate is much lower than the World Health Organisation requirements. This efficient, convenient and low-cost technology would be useful in addressing water shortage issues during natural disasters.

Engagement and Outreach

JC-WISE Blue-Green School Partnership Programme

The Jockey Club Water Initiative on Sustainability and Engagement (JC-WISE), hosted by our Faculty of Social Sciences, continues to promote water-use efficiency to the public through cross-sectoral collaborations. Launched in 2019, the Blue-Green School Partnership (BGSP) Programme is a one the key programmes of JC-WISE to enhance the awareness on water sustainability issues among primary and secondary school students. Students of the participating schools will be able to learn about ecological surveying and water footprint, through the key core activities of BGSP, “Adopt a River” and “Water Wise School”. The participating schools can also join local river tours, inter-school competitions, school water day, and artwork workshops organised by JC-WISE.

Courses and programmes

Long-term water sustainability of the world has been compromised as the water supply of countries are under threat due to urbanisation and industrialisation. Our Common Core Office wishes to promote the importance of water sustainability through their Water: Resources, Policy and Technology course. The course studies global water issues through cultural, technological, political, and institutional frameworks. Students will be able to understand the most pertinent issues relating to global water resources as well as the cultural differences and attitudes towards water conservation.
